What are Antioxidants?

All About Antioxidants
Antioxidants are all the rage right now in the wellness world. We’re looking for them in our food and skincare, but do we even know what they are?
Recent research has revealed that antioxidants are the body’s natural defense system for fighting against free radicals. Free radicals are basically the chemicals in the body that cause cell damage which can lead to cancer. Antioxidants can help reduce the levels of free radicals, as well as provide other benefits such as strengthening the immune system, better sleep, and healthier skin.
Luckily, antioxidants can be easily incorporated into the diet with plant based foods. Some suggestions are:
- green tea
- matcha
- red wine
- chocolate
- blueberries
- walnuts
- avocado
- kale
- herbs & spices
- superfoods like acai, goji berries, hemp seeds
While antioxidant supplements are available, they pose the risk of too many antioxidants. It’s important to balance antioxidants with oxidants (free radicals), otherwise the body is overloaded and creates a buffer. Dieticians recommend staying away from supplements and sticking with antioxidant rich foods.
