What Can You Drink While on a Diet?

What Can You Drink While on a Diet?

To start living a healthier lifestyle is not easy. You must change your diet, work out schedule, sleep schedule and more. However, when the weekend comes around and your friends are all going to the bars, do you have to change your drinking schedule? The answer is definitely YES. The more alcohol you drink, the weight loss process slows down tremendously because the body burns the alcohol before anything else.

We are going to dive into the Dos and Donts, and a brief tip sheet on the least harmful brands & drinks to order at the bars to stay on track for your diet.

If you are on a low carb diet, wine is much lower in carbs than any other beer. Spirits like Vodka, Whisky and Tequila contain zero carbs, but may have massive amounts of sugars in their ingredients (mostly flavored spirits).

In simple form, if you would like to drink but keep on your diet, drink spirits with NO mixers. AVOID any sugar sweetened drinks.

Drinks to avoid:

Rum and Coke (Dark rum)- 39 Grams of Sugar

Vodka Orange Juice- 28 grams of Sugar

Gin and Tonic- 16 Grams of Sugar

White Russian- 17 grams of Sugar

Cosmopolitan-13 Grams of Sugar

There is still a way to enjoy a few cocktails while on a diet, however be aware of the alcoholic drinks that are low carbs with low sugars. Here is the list of the 5 Drinks we recommend that you should order the next time you hit the bars:

  1. Champagne or dry sparkling wine — one glass contains about 1 grams of net carbs.
  2. Dry wine — red or white — one glass contains about 2 grams of net carbs.
  3. Vodka and Soda Water — one long drink contains 0 grams of carbs.
  4. Whiskey — one drink contains 0 grams of carbs.
  5. Dry Martini — one cocktail contains 0 grams of carbs.

Now onto Beers and Wine coolers. In terms of Wine coolers such as Smirnoff Ices, twisted teas, Bacardi coolers, STAY AWAY. These drinks are essentially sugar bombs dashed with small dose of alcohol. Although they may taste the best, they are the WORST. Example being, a Smirnoff Ice contains 31 Grams of Sugar!

Now lets talk about Beers. The biggest deterrent of beers is the brand of beer you drink. Ideally any light beer contains less carbs which is the better options out of the few. Here is the list of brands from best to worst in terms of carbs:

Miller Light Select: 1.9 G Carbs

michelob ultra: 2.6 G Carbs

Natural Light: 3.2 G Carbs

Busch Light: 3.2 G Carbs

Miller Lite: 3.2 G Carbs

Coors light: 5 G Carbs

Bud Light: 7 G Carbs

Becks: 9 G Carbs

In most things in life, if you like to enjoy a few cocktails while dieting, it is okay in moderation. Stay away from mixed cocktails and if you are a beer drinker keep an eye on which brands you are ordering. Stay thirsty my friends, Cheers!
